More Thoughts On Google Coming For Digg (Gigg?)

You’ve probably heard by now the ideas around the Internet that Google could possibly create a Digg-like service out of Google Reader. Thanks to their recent ‘Trends’ feature we know the data for each user is essentially there, but it’s the interaction of one user’s data with another user’s that’s missing.

Today however while checking out Google’s just-out-of-beta Groups, I saw something that brought me back to the above idea about Google Reader as a Digg-like service. Google Groups encourages the kind of interaction that would be needed for a Google Digg…(lets just call it Gigg). Not only that, but they give all users profiles, complete with user selected bio information, avatars, and profile view numbers…this is starting to sound a lot more like Digg already.

I would not at all be surprised to see these user profiles (which have an icon place holder that is the exact same as the Google Talk icon placeholder and now Gmail contact list icon placeholder) consolidated as one giant Google user profile for each user that is used for every Google Service they use…including Google Reader…you see where I’m going here? Maybe these images next to each other will help you:

I foresee a user profile page where one user can see another user’s starred or shared Google Reader data (essentially a Digg). Maybe they note next to that starred or shared link how many other people or times its been starred or shared and a link to all those who did. Maybe they have comments on the shared links… Maybe they make a front page where all the most popular links are collected and showcased… Do you Gigg it?
