SuperGu Clones Digg, Then Clones Me!

Orli over at Go2Web2 was good enough to write a post about the site SuperGu. Little more needs to be said than what she showcased with her side-by-side screenshots. It’s simply a blatant rip-off of Digg. I noticed it a few months ago and wrote about it but didn’t want to call it by name to in anyway validate it.

However Michael Arrington over at TechCrunch just picked up on Orli’s story and wrote about it, so now the cat is really out of the bag.

What I personally find most amusing (annoying) about the site is the ‘Top Users’ section. Here you’ll find the user names of many of the top Digg users, including yours truly. Now I have obviously never signed up for this site, nor would I ever use Paris Hilton’s album cover as my avatar.

Could the same name be a coincidence? Even if you look past that it’s a pretty unique name, there is still the fact that many other top Digg user’s names appear on the site despite it not actually being them.

Than of course there are other sites like this one which does the exact same thing. Though not as blatant a Digg rip-off, there’s the good old parislemon name again…along with other top Digg user’s names…and once again, I have never signed up for this site.

If you think of your user name as your online presence, what’s to stop someone who trusts me on Digg from seeing my name on one of these sites and assuming that the crappy pair of shoes parislemon recommends are good? Nothing of course. The only thing connecting me to them is that user name. I see this problem growing in the future.

Hopefully Digg will shut them down, but I have no doubt more will pop up.
