Technorati WTF Pretty Useful, Gunning For Digg?
Technorati officially launched their new WTF (which stands for ‘Where’s the Fire?’ not the other commonly used phrase) feature for the site today, and after messing around with it for a little while, I must say I think it’s kind of cool.
There are two main things I like about the service: it’s ease-of-use and it’s speed. Perhaps it’s just because it’s brand new and not many people are using it right now, but this thing’s speed puts Digg to absolute shame.
You simply submit a topic, put in a title, and then write a blurb about it. It doesn’t even have to be from an exterior site, you could just write a sentence about something you think is noteworthy and post it. Of course if you want to post a link to a site, that is very easy too, just copy the link into the body of the WTF description, it’ll automatically format it for you. Click ‘Submit’ and you’re done!
You can then browse the hot topics based on how many blurbs they have written on them, and vote for the blurbs you like the best. Though it does keep track of which stories have the most votes, as far as I can tell there is no way to see who voted for what. I like that, it’s kind of like Digg minus the whole ‘you scratch my back, I’ll scratch yours thing’. On the downside, the site doesn’t seem to keep track of what you vote for either.
It’s a kind of cool extension for the huge community on Technorati and maybe a good way to bring some life back into the site which appears to want to be social, but really isn’t. Too few people are using it right now however to be able to tell if it’ll have any legs in the social voting arena that Digg dominates.
