Nine Inch Nails, Giving the Music to the Fans

In a time when many artists and most record companies are insistent on DRM and a feeling of overall lock-down in usage rights for their music in hopes of stopping piracy in the digital age, Nine Inch Nails seems perfectly happy to go in the other direction.

With two songs on their last album, the band (aka Trent Reznor) released two album tracks in GarageBand format so anyone could edit and remix them. Well they’re doing it again…and will eventually release the entire album in the format so fans can remix it! There is also word they’ll be setting up a method of uploading and sharing the mixes.

I’ve never really gotten into using GarageBand, mostly because I have no idea where to start. But being able to remix and mess around with studio cuts of new Nine Inch Nails songs, that’s probably as good of place as any.
