Apple Plus The Beatles Minus DRM

I’m a little hesitant to write a real post today given that everything else seems to be a joke, but this is story seems to have some credibility.

Tomorrow, Steve Jobs will appear at an EMI press conference to make some kind of announcement. Early rumors suggested he would finally be announcing the availability of The Beatles catalog on iTunes (honestly, what has been the hold up?). A more interesting rumor is that Jobs will announce a formal agreement with EMI to sell their music on iTunes DRM-free.

When Jobs posted his anti-DRM rant last month on Apple’s website, most of the music companies seemed to write it off as an “easy for him to say” appeal to the popular opinion. EMI, however voiced support for the call, and now they may be ready to put their money where their mouth is, literally.

My feeling on the whole DRM topic, and I think others agree, is that people don’t mind paying for their music as long as they actually own it completely and not just in a way dictated by the record companies and Apple or anyone else for that matter. If this is true, I definitely plan on pretty much exclusively buying EMI music on iTunes to show my support and I hope others will follow suit.
