Google Desktop Comes to the Mac, but Why?
TUAW has the scoop on Google Desktop for the Mac. Obviously its been doing wonders for PCs for a while, but this is its first release on the Mac. It should be found here very soon!
While Google Desktop is a must-have for PCs, the question is if there is any point on a Mac when OS X already features Spotlight which does pretty much the same thing in terms of indexing your files.
TUAW goes into this and basically finds that Google Desktop for the Mac is still very useful if you use many of the online Google apps especially Gmail (since Spotlight doesn’t scope those obviously unless you download them to mail via POP).
I’m gonna download it just for the cmd-cmd pop-up Google search box. Love that thing at work.
Everyone knows Google and Apple are quite buddy-buddy these days, so maybe we can expect to see Google Desktop built-in or as an extension for the new version of Spotlight in OS X Leopard. Wishful thinking?
[UPDATE]: Here’s the post on the Official Google Blog about the release.
