Google Maps ‘Street View’, GPS, and New YouTube Player
Google, as always, has quite a few interesting things that could be coming down the pipeline shortly.
The first is supposedly already out and working: Google Mobile Maps with GPS. I wish my phone supported this, but for those who do have such a phone, this looks to be a great utility for the perpetually lost. [via blackrimglasses]
Next comes word that Google has recently registered just about every URL containing the words ‘Google Maps Street View’ – so one would assume such a feature will be coming. Googling Google thinks that this could be launching as soon as this Tuesday at Where 2.0.
The name is pretty straight-forward, but what it will exactly look like is anyone’s guess. I’m thinking something like the old game Streets of SimCity. Anyone else remember that one? I love that game, can’t believe it’s 10 years old.
It’s interesting that this appears to be another area where Google could be taking ideas from Microsoft, as they already have a ‘Street View’ on Live Search Maps.
Finally, it looks like Google is gearing up to launch a revamped YouTube player for all the videos on that site. This new player looks to be taking a more Apple-like approach to design – it looks not unlike Cover Flow (which yes, I know Apple didn’t invent, but rather bought) and Front Row – with related videos now being displayed within the player window at the bottom (on hover) complete with a faded drop-shadow.
There also appear to be direct links to embed or get the URL of each video within the player itself now. Pretty nifty looking.
[UPDATE 5/29]: Google Maps ‘Street View’ is now live for select cities. Basically for certain streets marked in blue you can see a full 360 degree picture of the area. Meanwhile Microsoft has launched the 3-D view on Live Search Maps for New York City, pretty cool.
