Google’s Most Loved Children

Google’s new platform-wide top nav tool bar, aside from being somewhat bland, might tell us something about which of its children (services) Google likes the best.

The following services are listed in this order:

Web
Images
Video
News
Maps
Gmail
Blog Search
Blogger
Books
Calendar
Documents
Finance
Groups
Labs
Orkut
Patents
Photos
Products
Reader
Scholar

The first part seems pretty straight-forward. The first 5 are all heavily searched categories. Gmail is the only other one that resides before the ‘more’ menu. It would seem that Gmail could be switched with Blog Search (the 1st in the drop-down) as Blog Search is obviously search related while Gmail is not. So perhaps Gmail is the most loved.

The drop-down ‘more’ menu is alphabetical, but what is interesting is what is there and what isn’t. Books and Scholar are there, but where is Notebook? Blogger is there, but where is Page Creator? Video is there, but there is no direct YouTube link in the drop down. You’d think a company acquired for almost $2 billion is worthy of its own direct link.

The order of these items also switch based on what site you are on. On Gmail for instance the Search emphasis is replaced in favor of the Apps (Calendar, Documents, etc…). However one would think that perhaps a link for Google Apps for your Domain would be found here as Google is clearly pushing it, but it is nowhere to be seen.

It would be interesting to know why Google chose to link to some of its tools while neglecting other ones. It must just love some of its children more than others.

I think that they are leaving YouTube out in general because they don't want to impair the 'independent' nature of the YouTube brand, nor confuse Google users with two video sites.

You can't even use your Google account at YouTube yet I am fairly sure (while you can at Orkut, for example)

    Good point mblair.

I thought of another missing one, Analytics. While I kind of see why they wouldn't include AdWords or AdSense, Analytics is definitely a tool that a lot of people would like fast access to.

These links definitely help. The homepage was too clean before and it is difficult to find all these links.
