AT&T Upping Its EDGE in Anticipation of iPhone

For all the talk about how the EDGE network is fine and good enough for the iPhone, AT&T is sure hustling to upgrade the network to what is being called “Fine EDGE”.

This upgraded network is hoping to get double the bandwidth in poor performing areas, making it so most users can get between 80-200 kbps transfer rates on their brand new iPhones. This of course once again brings up the issue of why didn’t Apple and AT&T just decide to put it on the much faster 3G network?

Reliability and costs were probably issues, but look at them scramble now in the final weeks probably bleeding money just to make sure the system doesn’t slow to an absolute crawl (or worse) on June 29th when the masses boot up iPhone for the first time.

The iPhone may be a revolutionary communication device, but the network its on is clearly anything but. It kind of seems like driving a Bugatti Veyron on an old crowded highway – in the slow lane.
