Initial iPhone Thoughts
Yes, I bought the iPhone. The 8GB version. No, I don’t have it completely working yet as the Verizon to AT&T number move isn’t working as nicely as I’d like (and the Verizon reps seem PISSED that all these people are calling them to cancel: see here).
Still, here are my initial assessments:
a) There was no need to camp out and/or wait in line for hours at the Apple store. I went there at 6pm when there were a few hundred people in line and said forget it. I called a few hours later and they still had iPhones available and NO ONE was in line.
b) I hear a lot of AT&T stores sold out of the iPhone well before Apple stores. No real surprise here.
c) The number transfer option – at least in my case – wasn’t nearly as easy as they claimed it would be. I kept getting hit with the ‘this number cannot be transferred error’ – AT&T and Apple are STILL working on it.
d) The iPhone is awesome. I walked into the store 50/50 as to whether I’d actually buy it. I picked it up and tested it out in store for all of 30 seconds before I decided: yeah, I need this.
e) The actual iPhone handset is smaller than I thought it would be. It actually seems about the perfect size for a handset – shocker here: Apple is good at design.
f) I have yet to use it, and I’m still happy with the purchase.
g) The other American cellular companies are in big trouble.
