iWaiting in iLines for iDays to iSign iPlans for $600 iPhones…aka The Madness Takes Hold
I simply cannot believe people are already lining up for the iPhone. Well actually I can believe it – but I have no idea why. This is not a videogame console, this is not a movie premiere, this is a cell phone – and a very expensive cell phone at that. Anyone who doubts Apple’s buzz is a fool. Apple could release a toilet cover and people would line up to buy it.
Lest you think I wasn’t caught up in the hype as well, rest assured, I am. I was sure I wasn’t going to get one just weeks ago – but as the days move forward, my faith in my patience grows less and less. I would love nothing more than to hold out to what will undoubtedly be an improved iPhone 2.0, and despite that fact that history has shown that it probably won’t be long until they release an update, I do not know if I can skip this monumental device.
Word is starting to trickle out about AT&T’s data plan for iPhone, which may or may not be called “iPlan”. Initial word is that it will be somewhere between $34.99 and $44.99 for unlimited data and either unlimited text messages or 2000. This fee will of course be added on to your regular plan – so it’s quite likely to be a solid $100 a month investment on top of the $500-600 initial investment for the hardware when all is said and done.
But really, what is $1,800 to use a cell phone for a year when you can just sit there and know that you were one of the first to adopt the iPhone. Screw the rent.
Two things I hope come from the iPhone:
- That in a scramble to catch up in buzz and eventually sales with the iPhone, the other cell phone carriers start making drastic changes to their crap U.S. policies. Nothing would be greater than unlocked phones.
- That Apple finally decides to put to rest it’s “i_____” naming scheme. It’s getting old Apple, start a new trend.
[UPDATE]: Here’s the official ‘iPlan’ pricing and press release from Apple. On the low end it’s actually much better than I thought it would be (as long as you don’t plan on talking on the actual phone that much). The inclusion of unlimited data is awesome, the inclusion of only 200 SMS messages sucks. The debate in my head rages on…
[UPDATE 2]: Boy that Apple is smart. They’ve made it so you’ll be able to activate your iPhone from the comfort or your own home via iTunes. This should significantly cut down on lines at stores…
