WWDC is Off and Running
While I’m not quite cool enough – yet – to be at WWDC, I am listening to it live right now. Here’s some of the big things Steve Jobs has announced so far.
- Gaming finally to be taken more seriously on the Mac. EA is on board as is Id Software.
- New look for OS X Leopard. Not drastically different but more refined and streamlined.
- Brushed-metal look is gone.
- Organizing is a big emphasis in new OS X – new Stacks program for the dock, new features in finder to make finding things easier.
- .Mac becoming more useful finally. Easily sync with other Mac no matter where they are. It remembers computers IP addresses.
- You can now browse your apps and files via Cover Flow.
- OS X Leopard is completely 64-bit, but of course will run on 32-bit chips.
- Core Animation is a improved and far more utilized.
- Quick Look lets you preview files without opening the app they run in.
- Boot Camp now fully built-in to OS X, but they recommend Parallels and VMWare as well for running Windows apps.
- Spaces is more fleshed out.
- You’ll be able to make Dashboard widgets easily from webpages. Webclips will be updated live automatically.
- New features and major emphasis on iChat. Share files, share videos. All the Photobooth features. New Backdrops.
- Time Machine. Wirelessly backup all your Macs to one drive wirelessly via Airport Extreme. Restore with one-click.
- OS X Leopard shipping in October. Basic version $129. Premium version $129. Ha ha, take that Vista!
- Boom. Safari 3 for Windows XP and Vista!
- Safari on Windows: Twice as fast as IE, 1.6 times faster than Firefox 2.
- Public beta of Safari on XP,Vista, AND OS X starts today.
- One More Thing: iPhone. 3rd party applications via iPhone Safari. Developers can go live with their’s June 29th – iPhone launch day.
