Nintendo: Wii’re Going to Be In #1 Soon!

Nintendo’s Reggie Fils-Aime made a very bold claim at E3 yesterday: though the Wii is still several million behind the Xbox 360 (which of course had a year head start) in terms of console sales, he says that Nintendo is going to take the crown and move to number 1 “in this generation (of consoles) very soon”. Boom! Reggie knows how to throw it down.

And why not? The Nintendo Wii is still hard to find nine months after its release and word is that supplies could very well be tight through this holiday season as well – over a year after the release! Nintendo has so far doubled Sony’s PS3 sales and is halfway to Microsoft’s 360.

Sony is trying to move more units via price cut, but the Wii is still exactly half the price of the PS3 now after the cut – and Microsoft appears to be trying to cater to families and young people with new devices and content on the 360, but has nothing near as cool as the Balance Board, Zapper, or Wii Wheel (to use with MarioKart) that Nintendo showed off today.

Many doubted Nintendo even in the weeks leading up to the Wii launch. Lets remember, Nintendo was in 3rd place in console sales with the Gamecube – and they were far back there. Sony, meanwhile, was so far in first place with the PS2 that it seemed unstoppable.

If Reggie is right, the new pecking order in the videogame industry will be:

  1. Nintendo
  2. Microsoft
  3. Sony

Incredible.

Good call Indefual - I often (stupidly) overlook the worldwide market. Thanks for the check.

Actually, your talking about America numbers--Reggie was talking about world wide numbers, in which the Wii is actually neck and neck with the XBox360, and will out sell it by the fall.

And the GameCube wasn't dusted by the competition. It was neck and neck with the XBox: Something like 21 million GameCubes and 24 million XBoxes.

@rod - I saw your post yesterday, excellent stuff. Made me a bit annoyed because I was going to do one on the EXACT same thing :)

It reminds me how the Xbox 360 Elite plus the HD-DVD add-on is actually $80 MORE than the PS3 (when it was at $599) which of course has Blu-ray built-in, but not too many people seemed to mention that. I of course did. It's all about perception.

@David - no didn't see it yet, just heard the big highlights on release dates, Wii MarioKart, and Wii Fit.

It sucks if they're taking the foot off the pedal a bit, but I definitely think they can afford to do so right now.

That's intense news - but not really a surprise. IMHO, Sony missed the concept of "value proposition" with the PS3 entirely. I just did a quick comparative analysis of PS3 vs. iPhone that I think hightlights Sony's problem nicely - why is a $600 phone selling like nuts while a $600 console isn't? Usage credibility, usage frequency, and marginal benefit - all of which are weak for the PS3 and strong for the iPhone.

Did you see the Nintendo Press Conference at E3? I thought it was their worst one yet...

Half of it was montages about how awesome the Wii was, and the other half was demonstrating Wii Fit. Where are the games?
