Who Would Have Guessed, a PS3 Price-Cut

If you would have listened to Sony’s President a whole 3 days ago, you would have for sure thought there was no price cut anywhere in the near future for the Playstation 3. Of course, if you would have listened to just about any online publication, including this one, you would have known much better. And here we are, 3 days after a firm denial from the head of Sony about a price cut, we have a price cut. The 60gb Playstation 3 will now be $100 cheaper at $499 while they will introduce an 80gb version for $599.

Sony still has a few problems here in my mind. First, why did they only make the “premium version” include 20 more gigabytes of storage for one hundred more dollars? Normally companies make the upgrade to the premium version a no-brainer for the consumer – just look at the iPhone where for $100 more you get double the amount of memory! Sony has just given one of the first examples I’ve ever seen where it may actually not make any sense to get the premium version. Wow, they throw in some game I don’t want? Yawn.

Certainly in an age where 80gb mp3 players are probably due to get a refresh with more storage, Sony could have forked out at least enough to match the Xbox 360 Elite’s 120gb drive. Instead they decide to keep trying to screw the customer by adding a $100 premium for a feature that probably cost them less that $10 in the upgrade from the 60gb drive.

The other problem lies in the fact that Sony is awful at PR. They have the president of their company denying something on record and than releasing exactly what he denied 3 days later. Hey Sony, learn the phrase “no comment”, and while you’re at it, learn the phrase “Halo 3″ and maybe think about coming out with a game that actually makes it worth purchasing a $500-or-$600 system coming up on one year after its release.
