The New York Times Adds Freakonomics Blog, MySpace Adds The Onion, Google News Adds Comments

Two great sources of content on the web it seems are entering partnerships with huge companies in need of content for the medium as the Freakonomics Blog has moved under The New York Times website and The Onion will begin providing content for MySpace.

The Freakonomics/NYTimes situation would seem to be beneficial to both parties, though as rexblog points out, no word of there actually being a deal (i.e. money involved) appears in the post announcing the move…which is odd considering the subject the blog usually deals with. This acquisition along with – if true – the Times opening up their ‘Times Select’ content to all readers for free will definitely win quite a few readers over.

The Onion/MySpace deal is a bit more curious to me. Maybe I’m wrong, but it would seem to me that The Onion’s demographic is much more in line with that of Facebook’s rather than MySpace – but perhaps that is exactly the point. MySpace, while still gaining tons of users, has been losing that ‘cool’ quotient – at least in the media and blogosphere – you can’t get much cooler than snarky, sarcastic commentary on current events, something which The Onion does better than anyone. One thing is for certain: The Onion is getting a lot of money to sell their soul, and they’ll no doubt make fun of that fact for years to come.

Interestingly enough Google is also experimenting with some changes to their News site, Google News. The site will begin accepting and publishing comments – but only from people in some way involved in the story on which they are commenting. I would assume this is for rebuttals or more information, but this idea seems awfully limited. Certainly Google News doesn’t want comments running wild like they do on Digg and potentially turning off readers, but when only those people in the story can comment on it, how inviting is that?

Lots of movement on the content front of the Internet these past couple of days. I just want to know who will buy the commentary on this blog? My money is on Horse & Hound magazine.
