Pranksters Pranking the Apple Speculators
As I said yesterday, let the speculation begin. As we’re now just two days away from Apple’s first “event” since WWDC, anticipation is high and speculation is starting to run rampant about what we will see in terms of new products.
The general consensus is that new iMacs will be on the way (Apple has noted the event will be Mac-centric as opposed to the iPhone or iPod) – but it was this belief that led a few larger tech blogs this morning to run with a tip containing more detailed information of what would be coming on Tuesday…the problem is that this “tip” was a complete hoax.
It appears some kind from New Zealand claiming to be Google Product Manager Tom Oliveri, wrote in about the iMac’s new brushed-metal look (which too had been previously speculated upon), the Mac Mini getting an upgrade (which I still have a hunch may be coming), the MacBook getting a small chip increase, and new iPods coming in September.
Engadget published the entire email and it was almost laughably brief and informal. Especially, as Engadget points out, given the real Tom Oliveri’s penchant for words. I think it’s safe to assume we are getting to a point where almost no rumor or tip can be deemed credible, even from supposedly inside-Apple sources. You may remember earlier in the year Kevin Rose claimed to have an inside Apple source feeding him the then recently-announced iPhone specs, and they were for the most part totally wrong.
The lesson: with Apple rumors, trust no one.
