Apple September 2007 iPod Event Thoughts
The Big Things:
-$200 iPhone Price Cut on the 8gig model! (presumably 4gig is done?)
-iPod Touch (iPhone without the phone)
-iTunes WiFi Music Store (for iPod Touch and iPhone)
-New iPod Nanos (new design, CoverFlow, video, colors)
The Smaller Things:
-iPod now the “iPod Classic” (up to 160 GB now)
-Ringtones in iTunes (take any 30-second clip for an extra 99 cents)
-New iPod Shuffle Colors (pastels)
-Starbucks WiFi Music deal (free access to WiFi iTunes Store)
The “Missing” Things:
-No Beatles! (for how much Beatles stuff Jobs uses in the presentations…)
-No digital radio as had been reported (never really believed this one).
Keep reading on for the blow-by-blow…
Here are some thoughts on the Apple News as it rolls in:
iTunes:
-Steve Jobs starts out talking about how great iTunes is. 600,000,000 copies of iTunes distributed, 3 billion songs sold, 95,000,000 TV shows sold (might have been 100,000,000 already if not for the NBC fallout…)
Ringtones:
-99 cents in addition to the song purchase. Still beats the pants off of Verizon’s and the likes $3-5 crap.
-Choose any 30 second sample you want.
-500,000 participating songs.
-Ha ha, during the demo Jobs plays ‘Give Peace a Chance’ (Beatles *cough*) but says this is the ringtone for NBC. Ha.
iPod Shuffle:
-New colors for the holidays. More pastels.
-Product(RED)
-Same price, same storage. That kind of sucks.
iPod Nano:
-Here’s the short (fat) Nano that we did indeed see in the takedown pics.
-All metallic finish.
-Big 2-inch screen (given its size, very small)
-Highest pixel quality in a screen they’ve ever shipped.
-Some interesting looking new games – 3 come bundled in, one is Soduku!
-All those pastel-y holiday colors again (we saw them in the takedown pics too).
-Coverflow on the Nano.
-24 hours of audio. 5 hours of video playback.
-A 4-gig version for $149, 8-gig for $199, good prices.
-4-gig comes in silver, 8-gig in all colors.
-In stores this weekend.
iPod (now iPod Classic):
-Now called the “iPod Classic” to avoid confusion with the 4,000 other iPods.
-New size range from 80 to 160GB (wow).
-30-40 hours of audio. 6-7 hours of video.
-80gig $249, 160gig $349 – nice.
-In stores now.
iPod Touch:
-Basically the iPhone minus the phone.
-WiFi.
-Safari on iPod Touch.
-YouTube on iPod Touch. – It literally is just an iPhone without the phone.
-Showing off the iPhone Facebook apps on the iPod Touch (Jobs apparently loves this app too).
-Seems like Apple is kind of making a new kind of computer now without declaring it, the micro-computer. The iPhone was first, now the iPod Touch.
-22 hours of music. 5 hours of video.
-$299 for 8 gigs and $399 for 16gigs (take that iPhone).
-Shipping in a few weeks.
One More Thing…
-iTunes WiFi Music Store!
-Previews, same 99 cent prices.
-I presume this will be coming to the iPhone as well. (Yep, free iPhone update later this month, nice!)
-Partnership with Starbucks. If you’re in one and you hear a song, a button will pop up on your iPod Touch (and presumably iPhone eventually) and you can not only see it, but buy it. Kind of cool – as long as they’re the same 99 cent price.
-Also Starbucks doesn’t have free WiFi, so I’m not sure how that will work. You have to pay to access their network THEN download? If so, that’s crap. (UPDATE: Okay, at least you’ll have free access to the iTunes WiFi store when in Starbucks – Starbucks, open up your goddamn WiFi for free, you’re already charging us $5 for a cup of coffee!)
-You can even view the last 10 songs played in that Starbucks (so I’d say we’re about 5 years away from Minority Report-esque highly personalized ads).
-This will be rolling out to Starbucks over the next year and a half or so (year and a half – we’ll have chips in our head by then!). Seattle and New York first, then San Fran, LA, etc… I know Seattle is Starbucks’ backyard, but maybe Apple wants to make a few more Microsoft employees toss their Zunes as well.
iPhone:
-Price cut! $399! Whoa.
-$399 for the 8gig iPhone?! A $200 price cut?! Game Over. Apple Wins.
That’s it. All done. Lots of big things, unfortunately no Beatles still – though AppleInsider did have a story up earlier than Paul McCartney was supposed to make some kind of special announcement today… That story seems to have disappeared… Interesting…
