Can I Get This to My Apartment? Google’s Undersea Multi-Terabit Cable
In 2009 Google is planning on laying a multi-terabit cable that will span the length of the Pacific Ocean. This is about the equivalent of a company building their own freeway that they can use for free and charge anyone else who wants on – as well as restrict those they don’t want on.
Obviously this is pretty big news, but here’s the larger picture:
Google would get access to a fibre pair at build cost handing it a tremendous cost advantage over rivals such as MSN and Yahoo, and also potentially enabling it to peer with Asia ISPs behind their international gateways – considerably improving the affordability of Internet services across Asia Pacific.
Pair this with Google bidding on the 700mhz spectrum and you’ve got Google being in control of a lot of communications for not only this country, but potentially the world.
