Gmail 2.0

For all the Google products out there now there are few that I would venture to guess are beloved on a day-to-day basis as much as Gmail. Though it is still significantly behind the likes of Yahoo Mail in terms of overall usage, the changes that it’s brought about (huge storage, Ajax), since it was launched over 3 years ago, have been huge. Now Googling Google has a hot tip: Google is hard at work and testing a “new version” of Gmail.

This test is supposedly only internal and with a few very trusted sources at this point, but I can’t help but imagine what Google is cooking up for this. Personally I’d love to see a little bit nicer of an interface, an improvement of the ‘Labels’ system – which you can bet will be renamed as ‘Tags’, an expansion of the ‘Starred’ area (maybe new color-coded stars), more storage (can we get unlimited like the lesser brands already?), and perhaps most importantly the ability to easily switch between different Gmail accounts.

As I said, it’s been over 3 years, Gmail is due for a revamping. Who knows, maybe if it’s big enough they can even leave behind the ‘Beta’ label one day. Oh and Google, if you need testers for this ‘new version’ of Gmail, you can reach me at any of my dozen or so Gmail addresses. Thanks.

[UPDATE 9/23]: After doing some digging Garrett now has what he thinks are at least two of the new features planned for “New Version” Gmail: Google Gears integration (so you can use Gmail offline), and the ability to view your account activity (so you could see if someone is logging in to your account without your permission).
