iPod Widescreen, MultiTouch, Digital Radio, and WiFi, Oh My!

As we near Apple’s Wednesday event, the rumor mill seems to be cranking out a greater quantity of leaks than usual. This worries me because a) this is going to lead to a letdown on some level as there is no way all of this stuff will be true and b) if most of this stuff is true it means that I’ll be spending a lot more $ in the short term.

Here’s the latest round of rumors courtesy of DigiTimes and vnunet via AppleInsider:

  • A widescreen video iPod is coming with a MultiTouch screen, high-capacity drive, and built in WiFi. *So basically an iPhone without the phone and with more storage, but word is that it will be a flash-based drive and not a HDD.
  • The iPod Nano will get a storage increase, a new iPhone-like interface (I would assume they mean Coverflow), price to remain the same. *No word on the short fat look that was leaked.
  • The iPod Shuffle will also see a storage increase but the rest, including price will remain unchanged. *So I would assume 2 gigs would be the smallest now, unless they offer a dirt cheap 1 gb one – which is probably a smart move.
  • At least one of the new iPods will have built-in digital radio capabilities. More interesting is the rumor that you’ll be able to click to buy songs you hear on the digital radio – so I would assume that means mobile iTunes.

Absent from the report is any mention of The Beatles or iTones coming to iTunes, but I’m still thinking that both are going to happen. Seeing as these reports are mostly on the hardware end, I wouldn’t expect to see either here. If these reports are in fact true, Apple looks to have enough on its plate to placate people and something like a Beatles announcement wouldn’t even really be necessary – but could be a very nice One More Thing…

How many iPods do you own? I know you have the iPhone...

Right now between my wife and I, we have four iPods - two shuffles, a Nano and an iPod Video. If this new iPod is essentially an "iPhone without the phone" I'm going to be seriously tempted to get a fifth.... argh!

Ha ha yeah, I'm in the same boat.

    I currently own:

    iPod (4th Gen) 40 GB

    iPod Shuffle

    iPod Nano

    iPhone

At other times I've also owned the original iPod Shuffle and an iPod Mini.

Luckily on the Nano I have the trade-in option at Best Buy, so you can bet I'll be trading that bad boy in for one of the new Nanos - of course I'm assuming it will be another winner and not just a short fat iPod Nano.

Ummm... no radio. Hard drives on the traditional iPod model which transitions to a touch screen interface ala the iPhone. Flash RAM (4 and 8 GB) on revised nano with revised interface.

That is all... Oh yeah.... and The Beatles.

I'm actually looking forward to this announcement. I want to be cynical and continue to hold out, but my 60 GB iPod Photo (3G?) keeps trying to die, and I'm a little tired of "dropping it to fix it".

Our household also has a 10 GB iPod (2G) sitting in some closet somewhere, an iPod Shuffle Rev. 1 and an iPod Shuffle Rev. 2 (both of which get good use)

@BW - I think those are the good calls and the safe bets, anything else would be icing on the cake.

@louis - I think a lot of people are in the same boat - meaning we all have old(er) iPods saw the flurry of improvements seemingly every month for a while, and now it's been nothing major for a little bit. I think if it's a big leap forward, say to touchscreen, a lot of folks may make the jump and upgrade.
