Some Early iPhone Adopters Are Mad at the Price Cut, Not Me

Quite understandably some early adopters of Apple’s iPhone are pretty mad that barely 2 months after the devices launch they have a massive price cut to bring the 8 gig version down to $399. Depending on just how Apple obsessed you are, this could have been even worse for you if in the beginning of the year you bought an AppleTV with a 40 gig hard drive, only to have Apple come out a couple months later with one with a 160 gig drive. We all know Apple products have very quick upgrade cycles, but come on.

As one of the iPhone early adopters (day 1) I can honestly say that I’m not mad at Apple for the move though. Would it be nice to have $200 back? Sure. But it does not change the fact that I still think the iPhone is the best tech purchase I’ve ever made? Even at $600, it was worth it. My life is made easier by the iPhone. I went on a trip for a week and for the first time in a long while did not feel completely useless without a laptop – I honestly never even thought about it while I was gone because I could do everything I needed to on the iPhone.

Apple is a late-comer to the cellphone game. They need to do some things to catch up and maintain buzz. Sure the iPhone even at $599 is great, but lets be honest, how many people are going to buy a $600 phone? A $399 phone however that is suddenly sounding more reasonable. Especially when you consider how many people have bought regular iPods for around the same price. An iPhone is an iPod – with about a half dozen other functions as well.

Having said all of this, had Apple announced an iPhone that runs on the 3G network with GPS, I would have been mad. That would have essentially been like me wasting $599. $200 I can deal with, if only so a larger portion of the U.S. can see just how great of a product it really is. What can I say? I’m a nice guy.
