Source: GoogleDrive (aka Gdrive, Platypus) is Coming, Probably Soon
A little birdy who shall remain anonymous, but is someone that I trust, has confirmed the Google will in fact be launching the online unlimited storage service that has come to be known as ‘Gdrive’, ‘Platypus’ or ‘Google Drive’ around the Internet. The source was not sure about the exact timeframe of the launch, but was confident that it would be “soon”.
We’ve known that Google has been using such a service internally for employees for a little while, but there have been questions as to whether it would actually be unleashed to the public one day. My source made it clear: it is coming for everyone.
Perhaps not coincidentally, the great Google blog, Googling Google, went digging and found out that Google just today secured the domain GoogleDrive.com and has moved it over to their own nameservers. Something about this move reminds me of a military jamming communication signals right before an invasion. Could the release of this product be imminent?
When you add to this last week’s finding of ‘Gdrive’ code buried within Google Apps – everything seems to be pointing towards a launch being close. Then again, Google is only a couple of months into its charging users for more storage program – and obviously an unlimited Google Drive launch would seem to make such a program unnecessary unless your storage would be wholly seperate from things like Gmail, which wouldn’t make a lot of sense.
Or maybe Google will take a play from their friend Apple and launch something only to deeply discount it a few months later (in this case down to free) and start dishing out the rebates. Nevertheless, Google Drive is coming, we’ll let Google sort out of the logistics.
