Facebook SocialAds: Did Microsoft Already Beat Out Google For A Piece of Facebook?
It looks as if the writing really was on the wall – or rather the flyer – Facebook will be launching an online advertising network of some sort on November 6th, most likely to be dubbed “SocialAds”. The question now is, does this mean Microsoft has already beat out Google for a stake in Facebook?
Here’s what we know:
1) Microsoft currently runs the ads on Facebook. One would have to assume that this new ad system is going to be showcased running on Facebook – which means either Microsoft has to now own a piece of it – or a piece of Facebook…perhaps in return for unbinding them from the advertising agreement.
2) Google runs AdSense and AdWords, the 1-2 punch in the online advertising world at the moment. Unless everyone is totally misreading this Facebook move, the idea is to eventually compete with the likes of AdSense and AdWords. This and the items listed in #1 do not bode well for Google’s chances of getting a piece of Facebook.
This is of course just speculation at this point, but we do know that there is a Facebook event on November 6th, where they will be showing off a new advertising system. We also know that Google is planning on launching their new APIs that will officially open their network the day before on November 5th. Is Facebook attempting to cut what will undoubtedly be a huge Google buzz off at the knees by the very next day creating their own super-buzz?
Google is going social November 5th, what’s the name currently synonymous with that? Facebook.

If Microsoft did in fact get Facebook to sell a percentage of its soul that is a huge deal. No doubt it would be the most important move Microsoft has made yet on the Web. It means they may actually be able to one day have a legitimate rivalry with Google in this space instead of Google simply kicking them in the groin over and over again as Microsoft pours cement over their feet.
A week and a half from now should be very interesting – the whole landscape going forward could change over the course of two days.
[UPDATE]: No sooner do I hit the publish button does a story come in via The New York Post that the Microsoft/Google winner in the Facebook sweepstakes could be announced sometime in the next 24 to 48 hours. The Post seems to be leaning towards Google once again playing the spoiler to Microsoft, but for the reasons I iterated above, I might be going with Microsoft this time…
