MySpace Platform’s Greatest Weakness: It Needs to Use MySpace or: Why I’m Pulling My Profile
Amid all the hoopla today when MySpace confirmed their plans for a platform at the Web 2.0 Conference, I decided to log in to MySpace and really check it out for the first time in well over a year. It took me a while to remember my email/password combo, but I eventually got it and logged in. From the first screen my initial thought was to immediately close the browser.
MYSPACE IS A GIANT GODDAMN ADVERTISEMENT! And a really ugly one at that. Who in their right mind would use this over Facebook? Seriously? Sorry, don’t let my social network get in the way of your ads. People like myself give Microsoft a lot of grief for their web presence look and feel, but MySpace in my opinion is hands down the ugliest site big site I have ever seen. Was this designed in MS Paint?
I’ve made the decision right now – I’m pulling my profile. I’ve joined well over 100 sites/networks in the past year and I have quit exactly zero, but I see absolutely no use in MySpace. If they want to serve up this many ads to me and not pay me for it, I’m going to use them to serve up my own ads. From now on my profile will be a straight portal for ParisLemon. If MySpace wants to ban me, so be it.
To the few friends I had (that would be you Tom), I’m sorry. Feel free to stick by me and support my site, but you will learn nothing personal about me via my MySpace profile. For that you can find me happily on Facebook or any of the other hundred-plus sites I belong to.
For those who wish to join my new MySpace “community”, you can do so here. I’m working on it as we speak.
