64 GB Solid State Drive MacBook Pro – The Future Is Now?
Ryan Block, the editor-in-chief of Engadget, wrote on his personal blog today that he had successfully installed one of Samsung’s new 64 GB Solid State Drives (flash memory) in his MacBook Pro. The drive, which Engadget got its hands on in a demo PC, had to be transplanted into the Apple machine, but all indications seem to be that it’s working brilliantly. Check out his Flickr pics here.
Solid state drive with their quick seek times, no noise, and low power usage are the future of laptops, but that future is probably at least a year if not two away because of their high costs – the 64 GB Samsung drive costs just about $1,000 by itself, compare this with buying an external 1 TB (yes, terabyte, 1,000 gigabytes) platter-based drive for about $250 now. Expensive, but very cool stuff.
