Google Maps Now Emulates GPS, Coming to iPhone?

Today ends in ‘y’ so there must be new Google Maps news to report – and this time it’s arguably bigger than normal. Google Maps for Mobile now has the ability to emulate GPS on phones without GPS built-in with their “My Location” technology.

How it works is all very ‘24‘-esque. Basically Google Maps looks at your signal and triangulates your position based on the nearest cellphone towers. While not pinpoint accurate like GPS, this service is said to be able to get your position within somewhere between 500 and 5,000 meters – which I’ll take anyday.

While the service will primarily work only on newer smartphones – one conspicuously absent phone is the iPhone – that is because the iPhone doesn’t use Google Maps for Mobile but rather it’s own custom Google Maps. I’m willing to bet Steve Jobs started getting the emails 15 seconds after Google’s press release went out about this feature and we’ll probably be seeing an update to the Maps application sometime in the near future.

If that’s the case, it will only add more weight to my iPhone 1.0 becoming iPhone 2.0 via updates post.

…meanwhile how much Redbull are they drinking over at the Google Maps offices? Today we have ‘My Location’, yesterday we had ‘Our Maps‘ and the new ‘Terrain’ layer and just last week they added the ability to pinpoint exact locations of addresses on searches. Go Google Maps Go!

[UPDATE]: And just in case you were worried that Google doesn’t have enough blogs – they now have a Google Mobile Blog for the news.

The quote "Today ends in 'y' so there must be new Google Maps news to report" totally made my day. :)
