Here Comes Google Drive…

In what may be the first major confirmation (apparently my source’s confirmation a couple months ago wasn’t major enough), The Wall Street Journal will run a story tomorrow stating that Google is gearing up to launch a complete online storage solution for any data a user wants to send them.

While to some this may be no real surprise – Microsoft has a competing service, though limited, as does AOL, and Amazon among others – the service known for a while as “Platypus“, “Gdrive“, or “Google Drive” (WSJ says it was known internally as “My Stuff”) had yet to be seen anywhere outside of Google’s offices and some were thinking it was simply for internal use.

Details are still pretty scant but it appears that some space will be alloted to users for free, while premium space on top of this can be bought – I would assume at a very similar rate to the current rates Google is using for Gmail and its other applications’ storage upgrades.

Copywright issues (MP3s, ripped movies, etc) remain a concern, but the biggest hold up appears to be simply figuring out how to get the “cloud computer” drive to interact with people’s personal computers just as a regular USB (or even internal) hard drive would.

Big hat tip to louisgray.com for finding this one first.

Sigh. Now that TechCrunch has it, they'll hit TechMeme, no doubt. :-)

Duncan is everywhere - probably even reading this right now. But you've got my link.

Mashable also had it before TC though so we'll see.
