MySpace To Join Google’s OpenSocial: An All-Out Social Networking War Has Begun
A couple days ago I wrote the following upon hearing about Google’s new OpenSocial plans:
There certainly doesn’t seem to be anything prohibiting Facebook or MySpace from joining up with Google as well – but it seems pretty clear that at this point it’s going to be a giant 3-way war: Facebook vs. MySpace vs. OpenSocial – unless Facebook keeps growing at its rapid pace, then I would expect to see MySpace join the OpenSocial camp for an all out Facebook vs. OpenSocial war. Just remember who Facebook’s new investor is…that little Google nemesis we like to call Microsoft.
Well today Silicon Alley Insider has a rumor, a rumor they’ve supposedly confirmed, that MySpace will be joining Google’s OpenSocial. I figured MySpace might try to go it alone for at least a little while with their own platform, but this should show just how much fear Facebook strikes in the rest of the industry.
Google’s formal announcement of OpenSocial is set for today, and you can look for MySpace to be the new biggest fish on board. An all-out Social Networking War is upon us.
[UPDATE]: The official press conference went down a few minutes ago, Robert Scoble managed a short, sweet, to-the-point interview with both MySpace’s and Google’s CEOs on the announcement and what it means.
