NBC Beds Netflix, Yet ANOTHER Digital Distribution Partner Not Named Apple
Look, I’m all for content being available to customers in a multitude of places, but with NBC now signing a pact with Netflix to bring next-day viewing of Heroes (and previously run episodes of hit shows like The Office and 30 Rock) they either have no faith in Hulu, in NBC.com’s streaming/downloading option, or any of the other digital distribution deals they’ve signed (I’ve literally lost count) – or they just hate Apple that much.
I thought the point of Hulu was that NBC felt it was getting a raw deal from Apple in terms of NBC shows on iTunes and so they wanted to create their own “iTunes-killer” which they were in complete control of. Well NBC, the way to make a an “iTunes Killer” successful isn’t to get in bed with every single other online distributor as well – it’s to give your platform exclusive rights to great content (which NBC does have). Instead now it just seems like they’re taking an “anyone but Apple” approach to their content. As I said not only is there Hulu, confusingly there is still going to be NBC.com, Amazon Unbox, AOL Video (via Hulu), and now Netflix.
I’ve been beta testing Hulu for a few weeks now and while it certainly has its problems – namely that it’s entirely too slow and for some series seemingly only has random episodes – it still remains a lot better than I thought it would be. Yet, NBC apparently has little faith in the service and is doing everything it can to set it up for failure with all these distribution deals.
While this is a great deal for Netflix – one that will further screw over Blockbuster (who’s out there reaching for way to stage a comeback) – it just adds more fuel to the fire that I think we’ll be seeing NBC back on iTunes sometime next year.
