Women Love Social Networking in General While Men Love LinkedIn

Online reputation search engine RapLeaf this afternoon sent over some interesting data involving 5 of the major contributors to Google’s OpenSocial (MySpace, LinkedIn, Friendster, Plaxo, and Hi5) and Facebook:

  • The greatest overlap between OpenSocial container sites exists between Myspace and Hi5, in which 43% of Hi5 users also use Myspace.
  • Facebook users are 63% female and 36% male whereas the sites integrated with the OpenSocial platform are 61% female and 38% male
  • 52% of Facebook users are 18-25, whereas 40% of the users are 18-25 for the five container sites on the OpenSocial platform
  • Facebook users tend to use 2.9 major social networking sites on average whereas users of OpenSocial container sites tend to use 2.7 major social networking sites

To simplify these numbers a bit it would appear that Facebook users tend to skew a bit more female, be a bit younger, and be a bit more social – all of which I would think bodes well for it in its fight for mainstream popularity against OpenSocial.

Even more specific data shows that while Facebook and MySpace have the same guy/girl ratio, LinkedIn is almost the exact opposite being 61% male. Interesting too is that while 62% of Facebook users also have a MySpace page, only 15% of MySpace users have a Facebook page – to me that means one thing: a lot of potential converts for Facebook. There’s a lot of good stuff here:
