CompUSA Going Out of Business
One of the last vestiges of my technological youth is about to disappear for good. CompUSA will close all of its remaining 103 stores after the holidays following the sale of the company to a restructuring firm.
It’s sad. I have fond memories of trips to CompUSA in the early-to-mid 90s to look at all the newest computer peripherals as I would walk the isles and dream about what I would want to buy next. But that seems forever ago now, so long ago in fact that my clearest memory is of going to the store for the midnight sale of Windows 95 when it first was released (yes, not only was I a huge Windows fan, I went to a freaking midnight sale for it!).
More in-line with my current technology predilection, I also remember it as the first place I tried OS X.
Many people saw this coming, as the writing seemed to be on the wall when the company closed more than half of its stores last Spring. It seems the pressure to keep up with the Best Buys of the world was too much. I’m not even sure I’ve been inside a CompUSA in the past 5 or 6 years.
I expect we can see some pretty awesome sales in the next few weeks as the company liquidates its inventory.
