IMDb To Launch Music Database/Social Network? Where’s the Movie One?

Mashable has received a tip about a potential new Internet Movie Database (IMDb) project: a database and social network for Music dubbed “SoundUnwound“. While Adam Ostrow rightly points out that the IMDb itself is probably ripe to get its own social network (frankly it’s kind of surprising they haven’t launched one yet), the fact that they appear ready to jump into that arena for music means one for movies is probably in the works as well.

I, like most people, love the IMDb. I doubt I’ve used any single website more (aside from Google) over the past 5-10 years. That doesn’t however mean I think it’s the best executed site in the world – in fact I think it’s kind of obtuse and clunky. Just in the past year they’ve finally added JavaScript voting so you didn’t have to go to a separate page and vote via drop-down menu ala 1996, but the area where you can see your vote history is ridiculously old school – it’s like a bad Excel sheet.

I’d love to see Amazon (who owns them) pump a lot of money into the site for a complete revamp. The site is 17 years old and despite some minor upgrades over the years, it’s starting to show.

[UPDATE]: Tip came from Trademork.

this made me think about allmusic immediately... almost exactly like imdb in its database, but for music. but i think it's lost a lot of its usefulness (especially as a tool for finding new music) by being so one-sided in its interactivity. no user ratings, user comments, or even discussion boards. imdb is only a little more interactive but much more popular... the "go-to." mp3 blogs, p2p services, myspace music/official band pages have probably killed allmusic's relevancy and the space is ripe for a big player (i think).

not a bad idea for imdb to do music first, because they'll continue their present traffic/relevancy while they shark in on the music network crowd. once that's theres, you know exactly what to do with your movie (and majority) crowd. suddenly, imdb is primary movie/music information source with the sharing/posting/interactivity of social networks.

oh, and i don't usually edit things. so if this sounds like rambling, my bad.

@greg - totally agree. sites like allmusic fall behind because they don't adapt with the ever-changing web. IMDb is too huge to completely lose out, but if they don't fix up their site soonish, someone is going to come along with some cool features that definitely suck away users (some already have with certain Facebook apps I would imagine).
