Pownce Goes Mobile, Offers A Few Things Mobile Twitter Doesn’t

A few hours ago Pownce went live with a mobile version of the site at mobile.pownce.com or simply m.pownce.com. For being “super alpha” as Daniel Burka describes it (in Kevin Rose’s announcement post), it sure seems to be working fairly well. Posting and replying in text is a snap – and unlike Twitter’s mobile app, they actually give you sufficient space to see what you are writing (and posting a link via mobile is finally feasible).

The look is very barebones, but that also keeps it quick for those of us not fortunate to be blessed with 3G yet. Embedded photos and videos are reverted back to simple links to the sites they are hosted on, but rating and reply functionality is intact quite nicely.

As I mentioned, posting a link seems to function well (just try doing that on Mobile Twitter), but posting a file appears not be allowed yet on the iPhone at least (not that you can really access files on an iPhone legally yet anyways). The most useful mobile feature may turn out to be the event posting. The ‘what’, ‘where’, and ‘when’ fields are all intact and it would seem this could be the perfect little app for an impromptu meeting while out and about.

Solid work by the Pownce team to get this out the door – even if they’re not sure about it yet. Communication apps such as this and Twitter are obviously going to be important players in the mobile field, so it was necessary for Pownce to create a well functioning mobile version of their site lest everyone be trampled when Google does whatever Google is planning on doing with Jaiku.

Now if only Pownce could actually get people to use the service more… Maybe this mobile app will help.
