Radiohead Takes the New Year’s Eve Concert Online, In Rainbows to Amazon

This year’s digital “it” band Radiohead has announced another move that will make citizens of the Internet happy – they’re going to be streaming a free, hour-long concert on New Year’s Eve. The show will be found on radiohead.tv as well as Current TV and current.com and is meant to promote the actual physical release of their album In Rainbows the following day.

Also of note is that it appears In Rainbows will appear on January 1st on Amazon’s MP3 store, but so far is nowhere to be found on iTunes. While it was previously rumored that Apple was in talks to bring In Rainbows to iTunes, perhaps the bands insistence that tracks not be sold individually hampered such a deal once again. If that’s true, it’s somewhat silly – on both sides – but Apple should probably just give in to that demand.

Whether or not you bought into the success of Radiohead’s pay-what-you-want self-release pricing scheme this year, you can bet that Radiohead has made a ton of money off the publicity it brought alone. It will be very interesting to see who follows suit with similar tactics in 2008.
