VOIP on the iPod Touch?
Talk is building that someone has unleashed maybe the killer feature for the iPod Touch: VOIP [via TUAW]. With VOIP (that’s voice over internet protocol aka talking over WiFi – think Skype) of course, your iPod Touch essentially becomes an iPhone when you’re within range of WiFi – only without the $60-$100 bill every month (and no visual voicemail and other AT&T network features obviously). This could be the first step in the missing link to awesomeness.
Since the iPhone’s launch, VOIP has been something I’ve been excited about because of the built-in WiFi. It’ll be very interesting come February when Apple rolls out the new iPhone development kit, if they’re going to allow for people to create native VOIP programs – so that when I’m sitting in my apartment I can actually make a call without using any of my AT&T minutes. You’d have to think AT&T would hate that despite their new “openness“.
