The Whoa Show Set To Launch A Never-Ending Internet Show
Seeing as the Hollywood writer’s strike has now dragged into its second month with seemingly no end in sight – and a huge void in terms of lost time and content even if they were to come back tomorrow – the opening is absolutely huge for content providers on the web to step up to the plate. One such company looking to do just that is The Whoa Show, which plans to launch on New Year’s Day with an ambitious first show called ‘First In Action’.
‘First In Action’ is a high-concept show that, if all goes as planned, will be never-ending. The idea is to make a chain of videos, at the end of which that particular video creator will leave a direction for the next video in sequence to the next creator. The example they give is that at the end of their piece (whatever it may be) one creator leaves the message to the next creator: “I want you to scare someone” – that next creator then makes a video to provide that outcome and at the end of their video they give the next creator the message: “I want you to confess something on tape for the world to hear”, and so on…
There will be certain rules such as no nudity or dangerous directions for videos, but other than that just about anything will go. In terms of monetization, The Whoa Shows plans of finding unique ways displaying things like advertisements based on each individual video. They’ve also left the door open for possible corporate-branded Whoa Shows. Though The Whoa Show will just be web-based at first, there are plans to utilize mobile technology in the future.
This unique idea is of course something that would never work on traditional television – and that could be important for when regular television does come back on the air and certain web-based shows are once again trumped by the high production costs of the networks. If something like this can gain popularity while thinking outside the box, that could be what really damages traditional televisions strongholds long-term. The Whoa Show launches in January at www.whoashow.com.
