iPhone Web Browsing Share Now Double That of Windows Mobile
It was a big story last month when it was reported that Apple had risen to the #1 spot in mobile web browsing share in less than 6 months. At that point they controlled an impressive .09% of the total browsing market according to a survey from Net Applications. So what did they do for an encore? Raised it 33% to 1.2%.
1.2% may not seem like a lot but look at it this way: as the iPhone reaches its 6 month birthday, it has now doubled up Windows Mobile in terms of web browsing on a mobile device, the same Windows Mobile that has been around for the better part of a decade.
Not surprisingly, the iPhone isn’t the only Apple product doing well on this list. All Mac OSes saw their web-browsing share climb to their highest numbers ever at 7.3%, up from 6.8% just last month. Linux meanwhile saw its share jump from .57% to .63% and a bunch of lesser-used devices for web browsing (the Playstation, the Wii, etc) had even better gains. In fact, the only system that fell? Windows. Down from a ridiculously dominant 92.42% to a still ridiculously dominant 91.80%.
One interesting note is that according to Apple 2.0, the iPod Touch is grouped into the “other” category and not included with either the iPhone or the Mac OS share. If that is true, Apple might have some even more impressive numbers as “other” makes up .11% of the market and the iPod Touch was a very hot seller during the holidays.
