The New $20,000 Mac Pro, No Blu-ray

Apple apparently has so much planned for next week’s MacWorld event that they went ahead and released their new Mac Pros (and Xserves) a week early.

The new Mac Pro, the “fastest Mac ever”, will have 8 cores (dual quad-cores Intel 45 nanometer Xeons) running up to 3.2 GHz. You can get up to 32 GB of RAM and 4 terabytes of hard drive space. They also have the option for the ultra-expensive 15,000 rpm SAS drives. The most expensive configuration WITHOUT monitors will run you about $20,500.

Interestingly as Webomatica points out, there is no option for a Blu-ray drive. If any Mac was going to get one it would seem like the expensive Mac Pro would be one of the most likely candidates. Perhaps they are waiting until MacWorld to launch that as a feature, but then why let people order them already without one? Without making too many adjustments the new Mac Pros are said to ship in 1-2 days, so you’d likely have it before MacWorld.

Apple must have some good stuff in store for next week, this Mac Pro update was high on a lot of people’s wishlists.

They are going to do what they did with the iPhone. $20k for the idiots who want the latest crAPPLE products, then two-three months later they will cut the price significantly and add the blu-ray feature. Stay away! Build yourself a system for half of the price, go with open source. Screw Apple and Windows.

Since years I refraining from buying a new MacPro and just wait for a new one that has a Blue-Ray installed. Now I have to wait even longer. I have iMovie HD since 2 years and cannot write my movies on an equivalent media. It is just a shame. Keep waiting for the world to change.
