Revision3 Launches ‘The Digg Reel’, a "DiggVideoNation" That Makes Digg Comments Useful?
Revision3 is onto something. Their biggest show is Diggnation. People on Digg love watching videos. You put those two together and it should be no surprise that today brought the launch of a new show on Revision3 entitled ‘The Digg Reel’, which is entirely devoted to the best and most popular videos on Digg. To top it off they highlight some of the best comments made by Digg users on those videos. I smell winning formula.
‘The Digg Reel’ reminds me a bit of the opening ‘Around the Net’ segment on G4’s Attack of the Show, which of course Digg-founder Kevin Rose used to be the co-host of – as was Sarah Lane, Revision3’s Director of Production. The difference here obviously is that these videos all come directly from Digg (where I have to imagine many of Attack of the Show’s segment’s clips are found as well), and there there is one female host rather than co-hosts. I’m not sure if I like the single host idea rather than co-host – Diggnation is of course also co-hosted and a lot of the humor comes from their back-and-forth – but their intent is to let the videos do the talking rather than the host. ‘The Digg Reel’ might also want to do something about their sound recording which makes it sound like it was shot inside a huge gymnasium.
If ‘The Digg Reel’ takes off, Digg may have just found a way to at least partially fix the ever present comment problem on Digg. Now if users realize that if they say something funny or useful rather than racist, sexist, or blatantly stupid, they may actually get recognition. Well played Digg, well played.
For all the hype Digg gets, I still think that Revision3 may be the property with the brightest future. It’ll be very interesting to see if something like this takes off on the newly useful Apple TV. Revision3 on the computer? I watch some shows every once in a while. Revision3 on my big screen TV? I’d watch it a lot more.
