Louis Is Right, Duncan Is Wrong, Now Lets All Be Friend(Feed)s

A few people have asked why I didn’t weigh in on the whole FriendFeed debate today – basically Duncan Riley of TechCrunch said he didn’t really understand why FriendFeed was exploding in popularity while Louis Gray told him he was missing the point of the service. Well first and foremost I’m busy with my new gig, but also I’ve said what I had to say quite a few times now.

I’ve been using FriendFeed since sometime around the beginning of October last year. Back then it had far less features and was still in private beta – but I still could see its potential – exactly what it is reaching right now. I was even surprised back then that Google bought Jaiku (which they still have yet to do anything with) instead of FriendFeed – which of course was started by a group of ex-Googlers.

Back in December I wrote a post entitled “You Should Probably Be Using FriendFeed” in which I stated:

“I really like FriendFeed and quite frankly I’m a little surprised that more of the “regulars”, those tech users who seem to be on every service, either don’t use it or don’t talk about it often.”

As so here we are. People are just now sitting at the table, but I’ve already had my dinner.

And of course remember that Prediction #7 for 2008 was that social aggregators would be huge. Naturally I mentioned FriendFeed first in that category (though they do go far beyond simple aggregation now).

I think this debate may qualify as another Bitchmeme – whew it’s been a while!

Hey MG, I gotta make sure I'm with you on FF too. My favorite part of FF is that it's easy to read and comment on mssgs posted by people I like who are using platforms I'm not. Like Jaiku, I don't use it, or Netflix, or Goog Reader Shared Items, but it's nice to be able to easily read what people I admire are publishing there. Wherever else we publish, we can meet up at FriendFeed (or similar lifestream aggregator thingies).

@marshall - yeah, you know I'm with you. for all this post-sxsw friendfeed talk you were the one who was really talking about it at the show. so in the future if people say FF blew up at SXSW (which I still think happened right after), I'll give you the credit, maybe you got to more people than I know :)

it was great meeting and hanging out with you there.

mg...in his blogging on tcrunch, duncan riley has always struck me mediocre, at best. but his rip snorting slime of what was a sober critique really paints him to be just another self-important jerk. i'm putting him on the ignore list, along with arrington, calcanis, scoble and the rest. their 15 minutes of fame is already up.

@anon - I'm not going to get into this whole back and forth over such a silly issue. I consider myself friends with both Louis and Duncan, I think they both bring a lot to the table with regards to the blogosphere.

This really seems to be coming down to another a-list vs. b-list (and c-list and so on) discussion, which it really shouldn't be. One person liked the service, the other didn't, it's as simple as that. I'm a firm believer in both sides of an argument/takes on a service. I think it's good to hear out all sides. No need to argue about it.

"As so here we are. People are just now sitting at the table, but I've already had my dinner." .. now you ae starting to sound rather pompous!
  • MG Siegler
@anon - that's fine. I have no problem being pompous.

For the life of me I can't understand what to do with FriendFeed.
All I get is a long list of Twitter messages and stories I dugg and stumbled...am I missing something?
