Twitter Proposals: @______ – Will U Marry Me?
I kept seeing tweets (Twitter messages) about it going back and forth yesterday between various people, but I didn’t think two people actually got engaged over Twitter – but yes, it looks like they did.
The two users maxkiesler and emilychang made it official at 3:14am in the morning on the 20th. Luckily for Max it only took Emily one minute to respond to his message using the standard @TWITTERUSERNAME protocol to say something to someone. Sometimes when I do that, I don’t get responses for days – that would have sucked for him.
Or what if Twitter went down right after Max sent his message? I guess it’d be like one of those cellular (don’t remember which brand – to show you how effective they are) commercials where the call drops off and the person on the other end is left hanging thinking the other person is mad beyond words.
Even luckier for Max is that Emily said “yes”. Imagine if she had said “no”. I can only hope you wouldn’t propose to someone over Twitter unless they’re going to say “yes”, but I definitely see a rejection happening at some point in the future. You could always play it off as a joke I guess (one of the benefits of having no inflection or tone carried over messaging on the Internet).
I’m positive that breakups have happened over Twitter before (when even an email is just too classy), but I wonder how long until we see a divorce over Twitter (actually posted on the service, not a result of one spouse using it too often).
So congrats to the happy, Internet-savvy couple. Yes, it looks like they are trying to twitter the wedding live. Will the bachelor party be included as well?
[UPDATE]: Wired was able to hunt down a couple whose proposal over Twitter actually predates yesterday’s. Wow, yeah – we’re going to be seeing a lot more of this. The real question may be: Who’s the first to name their baby ‘Twitter’?
