While said devices are quite cool looking. DVR functionality will become harder and harder to implement as analog TV (which is as easy to record and plugging the cables into your VCR) goes away. Most HD channels are encrypted, especially up here in Canada where *all* of them are encrypted, so any old box can't record things.

Secondly while having access to lots of movies instantly, what about all the movies you already own, or the content on your home PC / Network, the AppleTV lets you access that, does the Flix box?

- D

@anon - good thoughts but pretty unlikely. rumors are floating around about best buy buying up netflix though...

@anon - I feel it's justified to say "free" because Netflix users would pay to use the service with or without this added watch now bonus.

i do want a one-box option, but I would want that one box to have a dvd drive, so they would still be included in my view.

I'm with you on video podcasts, but I afraid most of the rest of the country isn't. It'd be great if they would catch on in a major way, but they'll never be the selling point of a system that Hollywood movies will be.

Other than price (which is very significant), I'm not sure what the Netflix box has that the Apple TV does not.

Netflix no more has a rent-to-own feature than the Apple does. Neither offers DVD or DVR features. Your "free" point is rather flawed since Netflix users must pay monthly fees (whether they view a movie or not); great if you're a Netflix subscriber, but remember, you want a one-box option, so DVDs are no longer in the equation... $20 gets 5-6 rentals on Apple TV per month.

Now let's look at the Apple TV's points. It contains a hard drive so you can store you personal movies, TV shows, DVDs as well as other entertainment media; watch at anytime without waiting as well as copy to another device (eg iPod). Speaking of other entertainment media, the Apple TV allows you to store and view photo galleries and music libraries...personal experience states this as an excellent option during parties! Add Flicker and YouTube access and you gain even more "viewing" options than Netflix's first foray. Finally, the hidden gem accessible to Apple TV owners (as well as iTunes users) is video Podcasts...there is a huge and diverse selection of information that is growing daily.

I'm not about to discredit the Netflix device, its market niche, nor the importance of its price and movie library. But I think careful analysis will show that you get what you pay for.

/

Apple is hardly using that leg, though. Apple should just buy Netflix and get it over with.

Then we wouldn't have to use such an ugly box on our televisions, and we could access the entire net instead of just Netflix.

Apple could do that in a heartbeat. The bigger issue is how long Netflix can keep up it's traditional business with postal rates going up every other quarter.
