Mad Men Can Sell 50 Year Old Products
Stephen Dubner has an interesting post on the Freakonomics blog about product placement on the AMC show Mad Men. It works just as you expect it might with any other popular show, expect that Mad Men takes place nearly 50 years ago, so the products being placed aren’t exactly hot items anymore.
Dubner details a book of poems by Frank O’Hara. Apparently it went form #15,565 on Amazon’s sales list all the way up to #161 after the episode in which it was placed aired. Again, this is a 50-year-old book.
I’m almost done with the first season of Mad Men on DVD, and I’m utterly hooked. There’s something very appealing to me about the lifestyle of the 1950’s. Namely the properness and wearing of suits. It all just makes today look very sloppy.
Of course they also have none of our cool technology, all smoke, and are borderline sexist and or racist.
