Microsoft Should Open a Brick and Mortar Movie Rental Store. It’d Be Faster.

I would just like to point out that once again tonight I tried to download a movie to watch over Xbox Live and once again, over four hours later (as of this post) I still do not have the option to watch it.

It is 47% complete — which seems awfully slow. (I just tested my Internet speed, it’s 6.3 Mbps.) But regardless, I ask again, why can I watch a movie I’m downloading over an Apple TV minutes after it begins, but over Microsoft’s system it takes several hours?

I just don’t see the point of digital distribution over the Internet if that’s going to be the case. I easily could have gone and got the film at Blockbuster and been back in 30 minutes tops.

Microsoft, you’re doing it wrong. If this doesn’t get better by the time Netflix integration rolls around, I’ll simply sell the 360 and go with the Apple TV and Roku, desire for one box be damned.

That's really unfortunate - I have a soft spot for the 360, and I hate to hear it when it's doing crappy.

Is this a fairly common problem?

    Also, cutest turtle evar.

    I like turtles.

I like turtles too. I do not like Microsoft too much right now however. Still a no go on the movie as we push past 5 HOURS and 65%. I mean seriously it's 65% done, just let me watch it! I could have just about FILMED the damn thing by now.

Mark - it's not a common problem that either our family has experienced or have seen others complaining about.

I think MG has some other problem with his setup (firewall issue perhaps?) and I'm puzzled why he doesn't want to call Microsoft tech support and troubleshoot the issue.
  • MG Siegler
@tdavid - game demos are fine, no firewall issue, downloaded a movie on itunes last week, was able to watch in less than 5 minutes...
  • TDavid
MG - Here's the number for Xbox Live help, give them a call already: 1-800-4MY-XBOX.

    Hours of operation (every day):

    9:00 A.M. to 1:00 A.M. Eastern Time

    6:00 A.M. to 10:00 P.M. Pacific Time

I don't see why it's such a big deal calling support -- you totally ignored that suggestion, BTW -- if you really care about troubleshooting the issue? Who knows, maybe whatever problem you're having will help others in your shoes if you share back to your blog.

If it's taking 4 hours to download a movie, then something is going wrong...FYI. We download movies fast here. You really should either call support for help or perhaps even your ISP - maybe they are throttling you!!
