National Media Talking Twitter, But Still Not Really Getting It

American Public Media gave one of my Twitter stories on VentureBeat a nice little shout-out on Marketplace, but the quote they use from another Twitter user at the end kind of misses the point.

One Twitter member who calls himself “lonelysandwich” did try to bring a little reality into the euphoria over the “Twitterati” beating the news reports: ”To be fair, if CNN could get away with …. EARTHQAKE!!!1! as the extent of its coverage, they’d likely have scooped … Twitter.”

First of all, that’s assuming that someone from CNN that uses Twitter was in the middle of the earthquake and was the fastest texter around or had Twirl or Twitter’s webpage open. More importantly, Twitter messages aren’t about fully fleshed out reports (as the commenter seems to want), it’s simply a very quick way to disseminate information.

It’s not going to kill CNN, nor is it meant to, instead it adds a new layer to the spreading of news quickly.
