Bad News: Why iPhone In-App Transactions Could Be a Disaster

While I understand the thought that certain shady developers will try to take advantage of users with this, at the end of the day, you’re still in charge of what you buy. If something is a rip-off, don’t buy it. If the game is a rip-off because it requires too many micro-payments, people won’t buy it and it will fade into App Store obscurity.

Micro-transactions on the iPhone are going to be huge — let me repeat: HUGE — for developers. I bet that this alone will lead to an even bigger explosion of development on the platform.

  • I completely agree. The sky is the limit, and it seems pretty broad the different ways developers will find to monetize (virtual extensions, premium content, added levels, premium services, ala carte models, bundles). Given all of their challenges, big media should be all over this.
  • So huge in fact, that for the first time in 20 years I have purchased an Apple product. I am (almost, it's in the mail) a proud owner of a used Mac Mini. Exciting times.
  • Wow nice!
  • Heh heh, I'm guessing my old ProDOS skills won't be of much help these days...
