What will the next iPhone be called? « counternotions

A good breakdown of potential next generation iPhone names.

This technically will be the third version of the iPhone, but since the current on is the iPhone 3G, that pretty much rules out “3″ from the name. Going with “4″ would make no sense, though Microsoft more or less jumped from 1 to 3 with the Xbox 360.

If I had to guess, I would say that if it includes the ability to record video, Apple may name it something related to that. But the “iPhone HD” name would be misleading since it wouldn’t be HD video. Otherwise, it might try to emphasize the rumored faster speed of the device, but again, that will be tricky to do.

Apple likes to keep things simple and all of those seem too convoluted, so I think it might just call the new iPhone, the iPhone.

  • The iPhone Video?
  • Certainly possible.
  • How about "OK I will finally ditch my Blackberry and Verizon, and put up with crappy At&T for an Iphone now"-
but those goes against Mac's normal short names doesn't it.
  • I tend to agree. No sense in naming it anything with a "3," given the iPhone 3G. That means the conventional iPod naming (4g, 5g) won't work. I wouldn't be surprised if Apple went with "Video iPhone" -- given that the 5g iPod with video was "Video iPod." They could always go with just "iPhone" because of the regular iPod being called "iPod Classic." I wonder if (and that means a big if, ultra-pc and newton fans) Apple also rolls out a new newton or small laptop the iPhone name or branding will change.

I think a possibility that you havent really considered is that it will be called "iPhone 3G" again. In the ads and everything it will just be the NEW "iPhone 3G". Much like there has been no name changes to any of the iPod Nanos despite several different generations. They're all just iPod Nanos.
