Kodak Explores Patent Sale →
Given the iPhone’s increasing importance in photography, these patents certainly seem like something right up Apple’s ally — especially since Apple is currently involved in a lawsuit over some of them.

Verizon's Android Share Down Dramatically... →
Before a few months ago, Verizon customers had essentially no choice. Then they got a choice. And in a few weeks, they’re going to have an even bigger choice.

Apple Proposing a Massive Glass-Roofed Retail... →
As a former Los Angeles resident, I know this former Borders well. I suspect the glass ceiling Apple Store will perform a million times better.
Meanwhile, I’m still waiting for Apple to build a better flagship store in San Francisco. Compared to some of the newer ones (New York, Paris, LA), SF is pretty “meh”.

Motorola's Jha Could See $62 Million If He Exits →
Well, this lends some credence to the notion that Jha may have helped push Google towards an outright acquisition instead of just a patent buy or licensing agreement. It’s certainly interesting that just days before the deal was done, Jha was suggesting that Motorola could go after other Android players over IP.
This also suggests that Jha could well see as much as $120 million over the...

iPhone 5 Pre-Orders Start September 30 -- On Sale... →
This sounds about right to me. 9to5 Mac has the story today, but TiPb called it last week.
For those keeping score at home, this means a September unveiling event and an October launch. Contrary to some nonsense you may have heard.
As always, these things are subject to last minute changes, but this is the plan right now.

HBO Shows Now Available in HD on iTunes →
This is great news. I was always a bit hesitant to buy HBO content on iTunes due to this.
Now if only I could upgrade my SD shows to HD for a small fee… Come on iCloud, you can do it!
It also seems to me that Apple is putting more emphasis on HD content in both the movie and television stores. Perhaps this will be part of a bigger push in the fall… It really is kind of silly that SD...

Rope-A-Dope, Indeed
Sometimes you want so badly to say “I told you so!” after months of getting kicked in the ass, that you do so without really looking into what you’re writing about. Or even thinking, really.
Such is the predicament Dan Lyons finds himself in today.
The artist formerly known as Fake Steve Jobs wrote the following this morning immediately after hearing about Google buying...

InterDigital Shares Tank →
That’s the sound of the patent bubble popping.
It will re-inflate again in a few years, or sooner if a new big player arises (Facebook?). But now that Google no longer needs to be a buyer, neither do their rivals.

"Defending Android" →
You’ll notice a common phrase amongst all the Android partners that have weighed in on the Google Motorola purchase so far.
Do they like that Google is buying a competitor? Of course not, why would they? BUT, they clearly realize this was one of the only ways for Google to offer Android patent protection.
That’s what every single statement is about. It has nothing to do with Google...

Waiting On The Android Nexus RAZR →
My three initial thoughts on this deal:
1) This shows just how much trouble Google was in with regard to the patent situation. A few weeks ago, they indicated it was wary of spending north of $4 billion on patents. Now they’re spending north of $12 billion.
Make no mistake, that’s the root of this.
And they had to do something wild like this. No matter what your take is on the...

Me. In England. Talking about fun topics like embargoes. What else could you possibly want out of a tech conference?
It takes place October 3 - 5 this year in London. I’ll be giving the opening talk on the last day.

What If Apple Used Their Cash To Buy T-Mobile Or... →
A nice thought by former Apple executive Jean-Louis Gassée, but not gonna happen.
Even if Apple was able to pass regulatory scrutiny for this (they’d argue that they’d still work with Verizon and AT&T and that Android is closer to a monopoly), such an undertaking would undoubtedly be a massive headache for Apple just from a logistics perspective.
Could they offer a better...
