joshuacalledme-deactivated20130 asked: We all know what the hardware story is going to be for the iPad 3 (or at least, a very good approximation). But what's the software story? Too early for iOS6, and Apple always need a good software story to explain why there's quad core processors or why there's 4x the pixels.

Kill Hollywood, Not Movies
The fallout from the failure of SOPA and PIPA is just as interesting as the main topics themselves. First, many on the web with loud voices are finally waking up to how corrupt the lobbying/political system is in this country. Second, directly-related, there’s a quickly growing anti-Hollywood sentiment.
The most forceful stance has to be Y Combinator putting out a new RFS (Request for...

Those who count on quote ‘Hollywood’ for support need to understand...
– MPAA head (and former U.S. Senator) Chris Dodd speaking to Fox News (as noted by Hillicon Valley).
I mean, he actually said this.
In one soundbite, he’s both threatening any and all U.S. politicians and implying that they’re corruptible. It’s a statement that so egregious,...

"Open" Social →
At first, Danny Sullivan’s post made it seem as if Google was killing off OpenSocial, the initiative launched several years ago in the face of Facebook’s Platform/Graph. But Google clearly didn’t like that too much, so they clarified with Sullivan that only the Social Graph API was closing.
Sullivan then questioned if there was really any difference? There is — but this is...

Push Pop Press And iBooks →
John Gruber follows up on Daniel Dilger’s earlier report that Steve Jobs not-so-subtly threatened Push Pop Press if they continued down their eBook path. Turns out, according to Gruber’s source, it wasn’t a threat, it was more of a heads up.
This makes more sense given how closely Push Pop Press worked with Al Gore on Our Choice, their first eBook developed for the iPad. Gore,...

SOPA Is Inevitable →
Marco Arment has this exactly right. We may have beaten these variations of SOPA and PIPA, but the sad fact of that matter is that they — or something like them — will eventually pass.
Obviously, all things being equal, such bills should never pass. But all things aren’t equal. As with most things, this is actually all about money. The MPAA and the other content lobbies are going to...

The Nike FuelBand →
Hate to say it so early on in the product’s life, but the Jawbone UP has been a pretty big disappointment. Not just the failure/refund fiasco, but the actual product itself too.
This competitor from Nike at least sounds interesting for two key reasons. 1) Bluetooth. 2) Something that Jordan Crook fails to mention in the TC article — it works with Path.

Soul Calibur for iOS Is Out →
An automatic download for me. I was addicted to the original for the Dreamcast back in they day. Yes, at one point I owned a Dreamcast.
At $11.99 it may seem a bit pricey (and that’s actually after a 20% release week discount), but it’s a Universal app that works on both the iPhone and iPad.
I’m downloading it right now, so I haven’t played it yet. But the reviewers so...

Google Comes Up Short In Q4 Earnings →
Remember when it would have been a better idea to buy Google stock with the proceeds from your idiotic Apple share sell off?
Yeah. That looked like a stupid thing to say 10 days ago. Today it looks like the worst advice ever.
After the egg was laid today, Google’s stock immediately plunged 10% (currently down 7.5%). Apple’s stock, meanwhile, hit yet another all-time high today (and...

iPhone Closes The Gap On Android →
The reports keep rolling in.
The surge isn’t surprising. But just how big of a surge the iPhone is seeing from the iPhone 4S — a “disappointment” remember — is pretty amazing.

Yahoo! Announces Resignation of Jerry Yang →
A sad, oddly quiet exit of a man who co-founded a staple of the web 17 years ago. The statements are extremely vapid all around.
But maybe the fact that this didn’t leak is a positive sign for Yahoo. Patching up the holes instead of continuing to move forward with them as they slowly sink.
