Seems about in line with what I was saying. Software won’t actually fix the problem, but will show the reality of the shitty connection situation (thanks AT&T) with the update.

Still, one thing that doesn’t make sense: Apple says the problem has existed since the original iPhone — something which seems right given what I saw when I tested the iPhone 3GS. But, even if the older phones show better signal than they have, they don’t appear to lose the bars in the same way as the iPhone 4 does (at least on my phone). That could explain why people never noticed it before. But Apple doesn’t mention that.
